Nandankanan Zoological Park celebrated its 65th Foundation Day on 07th January, 2025. Hon’ble Minister of Forests, Environment and Climate change, Government of Odisha Sri Ganesh Ram Singh khuntia, has graced the occasion as the chief guest. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Head of Forest Force, Odisha, Sri Debidutta Biswal, IFS and , Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) and Chief Wildlife Warden, Odisha Sri Prem Kumar Jha, IFS have also graced the occasion as guest of honour.
Director, Nandankanan Biological Park Dr Manoj V. Nair, IFS, welcomed the guests and other invited dignitaries. He presented the progress and management of the park for the financial year 2023-24 in the form of small movie named “Nandankanan: Towards a World Class Zoo”. In the said event, 14 staff of Nandankanan who rendered exceptional services during the year 2023-24 were felicitated in 14 categories with certificates and monetary prizes.
Further, best zoo ambassador, best performers under citizen science programme, internship programme, and zoo volunteer, who contributed towards animal conservation efforts at the zoo were also felicitated. As per the announcement made by the Hon’ble Minister, scholarship is provided to one boy and one girl student who secured highest mark in 10th examination from Nandankanan High School. In addition that, Hon’ble Minister publishing the names of Zoo Ambassadors for the year 2025.
A digital documentation showcasing the new inaugural items at Nandankanan has been released by guests. The Annual Report for the year 2023-24 and Highlights of Nandankanan were released on the august occasion.
In addition, lion cubs and Giraffe calves named which were finalised through online poll conducted by various social media platforms. The following inaugural items were inaugurated on this auspicious occasion.
An upgraded, more natural and enriching Himalayan Black Bear enclosure created which includes nature merging landscaping, hidden feeding platforms an undulating terrain and waterfall with a fallen tree bridge simulate the bear’s natural habitat in wild. Sprinklers along the boundary and foggers concealed in the rocks ensure a refreshing and cool atmosphere. This enclosure encourage natural behaviours, promote the bear’s physical and mental well-being simultaneously providing visitors a closer glimpse into their lives. The visitor area is provided with naturalistic shed and informative signages to create awareness about conservation.
The Centre for Conservation Research and Training includes the newly established Biobanking facility to preserve the genetic resources of endangered species along with the existing zoo laboratory for advanced disease surveillance in zoo animals. Biobank help to mitigate the risks of biodiversity loss, aid in assisted reproductive technologies, and support research in genetics and disease management, contributing to global conservation efforts.
Upgraded modern Zoo Library & Digital Hub developed over 2840 sq. ft., having an extensive collection of more than 5000 books and journals on wildlife biology, biodiversity conservation, forestry, and veterinary sciences. The library's transformation is marked by a thematic facade, modern interiors, upgraded flooring, and an entry ramp for Divyangs, ensuring inclusivity for all visitors. This upgraded library proves Nandankanan’s commitment to fostering conservation education, supporting wildlife research, and promoting awareness about biodiversity conservation.
The Zoo Security Staff Residential complex functioning over an area of 2940.44 sqm, become fully operational for 44 OISF personnel. The complex facilitates separate barracks for 24 male and 12 female security staff, accommodations for officers, a dedicated security cabin, a well-equipped kitchen and dining area. This modern facility ensures efficiency and comfort for the security staff ultimately enhancing safety and security inside Nandankanan Zoological Park.
A new Bird Quarantine Facility had been established in an off-exhibit area of Nandankanan Zoological Park located away from animal enclosures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and ensuring the health and safety of the avian population. It extends over an area of 5,630 square feet and provides 11 individual units with a CCTV surveillance system designed to meet species-specific requirements. Primary objective is to quarantine newly arrived avian species and screen them against potential infections before integrating them into the main animal enclosure of the zoo.
A wetland trail along the Kanjia Lake developed which stretches around 1km along Kanjia Lake with 30 informative signages describing the importance of wetland and the biodiversity including local flora and fauna. This immersive educational event will be arranged every week where the nature guide will guide the participants through the trail describing about wetland dependant birds, insects, animals and plants highlighting the importance of wetlands.
The event was adorned by prominent dignitaries who are affiliated with the organization, along with other guests such as representatives from print and electronic media, visitors, local residents, and zoo personnel. Mr. Sanath Kumar N., IFS, Deputy Director of Nandankanan Zoological Park, presented a vote of thanks to everyone who attended the event.
