Celebration of 63rd Foundation Day of Nandankanan Zoological Park
29th December, 2022

The 63^rd Foundation Day of Nandankanan Zoological Park was celebrated inside the park on 29th December, 2022 at 10:30 am. Shri Sushil Kumar Popli, IFS, PCCF (WL) & CWLW presided the meeting. Sri Pradip Kumar Amat, Hon’ble Minister, Forest, Environment & Climate Change, Govt. of Odisha graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Sri Debidutta Biswal, IFS, PCCF & HOFF, Odisha and Sri Suresh Kumar Routray, Hon’ble MLA, Jatni graced the occasion as Guest of Honour. Dr Manoj V. Nair, IFS, Director, Nandankanan Biological Park given the key note address and Dr Sanjeet Kumar, IFS, Deputy Director given the vote of thanks. The best workers of Nandankanan were rewarded by the Guests for their tremendous works. Annual Report 2021-22, Eco-calendar-2023 and other publications were released on the occasion. The celebration was attended by the Ex-Directors of Nandankanan Zoological Park, Senior Forest Officers of the state, NGOs and eminent personalities of the State, Researchers and academicians, Members of Technical Committee, Health Committee of Nandankanan Zoological Park, Representatives from Print & Electronic media, local peoples and staff members of the park.

On the eve of 63rd Foundation Day of Nandankanan Children’s park,Hand rearing baby unit, Modern Operation Theatre inaugurated by the Chief Guest and a new species- Slender-tailed Meerkat were released into the enclosure by the Chief Guest.

Nursery for hand rearing of animal babies

Nandankanan zoo receives orphaned and rescued wild animal babies from all across the state on regular basis for their hand raising and rehabilitation. Animal babies of the zoo animals also require bottle feeding due to mother rejection and in health issues. ‘Nursery for hand rearing of animal babies’ is a centre categorically designed to cater all these needs. The centre has the facility for the animal keeper to stay inside for rearing of new-born round the clock. It has one milk preparation area, one neonatal ICU for sick neonates, separate cells for carnivore, herbivore and primate babies. The centre is attached to five small closed roof paddock areas where the animal babies can have exercise and access to sunlight. This fully air-conditioned facility will definitely boost our efforts in rearing rescued hapless neonates.

Operation theatre

Nandankanan has always tried to provide best healthcare facility for its denizens. The new ‘Operation theatre’ has all advanced facilities for surgical intervention of sick captive animals. The centre has facilities for gaseous anaesthesia, oxygen supply, patient monitor, ventilator facility, ultrasonography, electrocautery system for bloodless surgery. The centre is fully air conditioned and fitted with ultraviolet lights for effective disinfection. It has all advanced instruments required for safe and successful surgery to take our healthcare facility to next level.

Children’s park at Nandankanan Zoological Park

The children’s park is situated near fountain square of Nandankanan Zoological Park with area of 16000 sqft. Children Park has renovated with beautiful landscaping & new Play equipments are such as-Swing-3nos,Slider-2nos,Merry-Go-ground-1no,Spring Rider-3nos,Double see-saw-1no, Air walker-1no,Penduum-1no,Trampoline(10')-1no, ABS Trainer-1no,Spinner-1no & Multi-Play station-1no. For maintaining cleanliness, ten nos of dustbins were fixed at different points of the park. 13 nos. of Sit outs are placed at different places of parks for sitting purpose. Different informative signages are given like birds of Nandankanan, State symbols of Odisha, Tree signages etc.for giving better information to children’s.

Release of new species-Slender tailed Meerkat

The meerkat is a small mongoose found in Southern Africa. It is characterized by broad head, large eyes, pointed snout, long legs, a thin tapering tail and brindled coat pattern. Recently this species was brought under Animal exchange programme from Mysuru zoo.

This book comprises detailed report of Nandankanan Zoological Park and State Botanical Garden for the financial year 2021-22.

2. Eco Calendar 2023
Calendar 2023 indicates all the government holiday and eco days.

3. Sunday Bird Walk- A citizen Science initiative in Nandankanan
This book will encourage citizens to generate interest in bird watching, identifying and documentation bird biology.
